What do the main minerals do?

  • Magnesium - contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, muscle function, the nervous system and a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. See the full magnesium collection.
  • Zinc - contributes to normal immune function, to normal cognitive function, and to the maintenance of normal skin, hair, nails and bones.
  • Iron - contributes to normal oxygen transport and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Calcium - contributes to normal muscle function and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
  • Selenium - contributes to normal thyroid function and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
  • Iodine - contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and to normal cognitive function.

Single mineral or multi?

A multi-mineral is the sensible default if you are not sure what you are short of. Single minerals make sense when you know - most often magnesium, or iron following a blood test. Minerals compete with each other for absorption, which is one argument for a balanced formula over stacking several singles.

Chelated, citrate or oxide?

These describe what the mineral is bound to, which affects how much elemental mineral a capsule carries and how well people tolerate it. Oxide forms are cheap and carry a high percentage by weight; chelated forms such as bisglycinate are often chosen by people who have found other forms difficult. Compare the elemental amount and the percentage NRV, not the compound weight.

A note on iron

Iron is the one mineral we would suggest not taking speculatively. Too much is harmful, and low iron is easily confirmed by your GP with a blood test. Get tested first.
